Critical Care

Studio Barbaar set up a series of workshops with Chiesi’s Critical Care team, where doctors, nurses, and specialists joined to explore what an ideal educational tool could be.

During these sessions I sketched, asked questions, and mapped out their needs and ideas.
From there I developed the first concepts, mindmaps and wireframes that shaped the foundation of the experience.

After the concept phase I guided the development team to bring it to life, working in an agile structure with a core group from Chiesi to adjust content and interactions as we moved forward.
This way, the experience grew hand-in-hand with their medical expertise, keeping accuracy and usability at the center.

Critical Care revolves around two virtual patients, both based on real clinical cases. Each case introduces a different situation, one a hypertensive emergency, the other a perioperative patient with complex conditions.

Users can adjust medication, observe the heart rate monitor respond, and control a volumetric infusion pump that reacts to their choices. Different drugs can be administered, and the cardiovascular response visualization system (CRV) shows how the body reacts: blood vessels constrict or relax, heart rate shifts, and circulation changes accordingly.

Critical situations can be played out safely, offering doctors and nurses insight into cause and effect without risk to real patients.

Working closely with Chiesi’s medical team taught me the importance of grounding design decisions in clinical reality.

To make the simulations credible, we used real patient test results and collaborated on the physiology behind every reaction on the virtual monitor.

The challenge (and the breakthrough) was achieving realism that both doctors and nurses recognized as accurate.
Hearing how these simulations could help nurses prepare for critical moments made clear how powerful educational design can be when it mirrors real life with precision and empathy.
